Books

Here are the twelve books that pretty much are it for me over the past twelve years. The Bible is of course supreme and primary. Here are the other twelve:
  • Chosen by God by R.C. Sproul. This one started it all.
  • Reforming Marriage by Douglas Wilson. This one made all things new.
  • Calvin's Institutes by John Calvin. This gave me the Reformation.
  • B. B. Warfield's Selected Shorter Writings. This gave me Calvinism.
  • Christianity & Liberalism by J. Gresham Machen. This gave me Christ.
  • Against Christianity by Peter Leithart. This gave me the Church and the sacraments.
  • He Shall Have Dominion by Ken Gentry. This gave me my eschatology.
  • Trinity & Reality by Ralph Smith. This gave me a renewal in my Theology.
  • On the Incarnation by St. Athanasius. This gave me the New Creation.
  • Confessions by St. Augustine. This gave me a new love for Christ.
  • All books and papers by James Jordan. This gave me my Bible and hermeneutic.
  • The Shape of Sola Scriptura by Keith Mathison. This one ripped me out of my modernism and into a healthy submission to the secondary authority of the Holy Spirit's work in the Church in history.
There are one or two more but I am limiting myself to twelve. Happy Reading.
I have recently been asked by a number of people what books am I presently reading. Besides the gazillion books, essays and papers on Covenant Theology. Also, besides the reading for Mondays and the monthly Wednesdays, here is a list of the other books I am presently reading:
  • Engaging God's World by Cornelius Plantinga Jr.
  • Calvin's Institutes Volume I. Ford Lewis Battles edition.
  • Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places by Eugene Peterson. This is simply the best book I have read in years.
  • Real Sex by Lauren F. Winner. A gem of a book on chastity and the holiness and delight of the marriage bed. Full of the church and the poetic vision and godly metaphor and straight talk. Super book.
  • Thine is the Kingdom; Studies in the Postmillennial Hope by Ken Gentry
  • Inspiration and Incarnation by Peter Enns.
So there you have it. All of the above books are recommended (though the books by Enns is academic). Happy reading!
Other great books...
  • The Christian Imagination: G.K. Chesterton On The Arts by Thomas C. Peters. This book is a refreshing, funny and lively interaction with Chesterton on such topics as imagination, poetry, laughter, stories, pictures and prigs. In a day when we need to have our spirits lifted, this book will provide some wind under wings. In a day when we need some laughter, this book will rightly tickle. In a day when our minds are dull, this book will enliven. It is really a good book. Not really available in stores around here, but certainly available inexpensively through the web.
  • The Holy Trinity by Robert Letham. (P&R Publishing.) Peter Leithart calls this the best introduction to the Trinity by a Reformed Theologian. The Trinity is the most important doctrine of the Christian Faith. Our God is our life. This book in the most readable way gives us a glorious exposition of the Trinity. Every home should have multiple copies of this book (one for the home and many to give away). Every husband and father should read this book and teach it to his family. This is one of the most important books to be written in a long time.
  • The Moral Vision of the New Testament by Richard B. Hays (Also his amazing book: Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul).
  • The Second Adam and the New Birth by M.F. Sadler (Athanasius Press, a ministry of Steve Wilkins' Church, Auburn Avenue Presbyterian Church).
Some Christmas Books...
  • Christmas Spirit by George Grant & Gregory Wilbur.
  • The Spirit of Christmas by G.K. Chesterton.
  • The Martin Luther Christmas Book by Roland H.Bainton.
