A Brief History of

What is now the ten-year-old Grace Reformed Church began July 31, 1993, as Grace Bible Chapel, With the support of all his family, David Deutsch began the church as a Saturday night meeting, mainly consisting of a handful of college students. The church met in the facilities of the Camarillo Evangelical Free Church for about six months before moving to an office building in Ventura. Attendance dropped from about 50 to 15 as services moved to Sunday mornings and many did not leave their home church for the new fellowship. About six months later, the church, now named Grace Reformed Baptist Church, moved to meeting in the offices of Primerica on Thille Street in Ventura. Attendance outgrew that place and in January of 1997, the fellowship began meeting at our current facility, the Thursday Club in Somis. The spark that began the church was a growing love for and understanding of the doctrines of the Reformed faith. The church has been blessed with men dedicated to serving God. Our first elders were Pastor Dave, Denny Deutsch, Ervin Martin, and James Freeman. They were later joined by John Ford. Grace Reformed Church has also raised up a preacher from within our midst as Chris Erickson was recently ordained as a minister of the Gospel. The church has sent forth missionaries also. Jason and Jemima Deutsch founded South Asia Gospel Alliance and have planted churches in Mauritius and India and have established a seminary in India. Maryanne Wardlaw works with disadvantaged and troubled youth at Caring For Life in England. Grace Reformed Church has been characterized by a love for the Bible and a real sense of family. Setting an example in this area are Dave and Virgie Block: Virgie as first member, Dave as first convert, Dave and Virgie as the first marriage, and their daughter, Maleana, as the first child born to the congregation. What is ahead for the church? That is up to us as we strive to discern and obey the will of God. If the last decade has been any foretaste of the future, we know we will face difficult times but that we have been and will continue to be blessed as we seek to glorify God in all aspects of our lives. |
