Navarro's Silent Film Guide by Dan Navarro ($39.95, plus $6 for postage) is a highly affordable volume that includes listings for 10,000 silent films (features, not shorts) within 660 pages. Not only that, there are 36 photos to illustrate the text, something AFI can't boast.

This book was very useful to me. I recently got the movie Betsy Ross, with Alice Brady, on DVD. I wanted some information on it—fast. Navarro's guide was right there and I learned quickly the date, the cast, studio, the length, and the plot summary. Many of the entries have notes, while others do not. I was completely satisfied with the information it supplied me in a hurry. There is, however, no index, which is probably just as well, as the size of the book would double.

Mr.Navarro has done the silent movie fan a great service compiling all these films in one volume. It's an excellent reference. Order from Dan Navarro, PO Box 7553, Ventura, CA 93006 or www.silentfilmguide.com.
