[Folk Music in Ojai logo]

Hello Folk Music Friends,

First, another huge thanks to all of you who supported our folk music series for so many years and in so many ways. Our last concert on January 30 with Diana Jones was a wonderful finale for us. Thanks especially to Brian Bemel and Alice Borgeson for surprising us with cake, comments, and Ojai's Mayor, Carol Smith.

Second, we're happy to tell you that Shane and Kelli Butler, longtime attendees at our events, have launched a new concert series. They want Ojai to have an ongoing acoustic music series, building on the tradition we began and carrying it forward with their vision and energy. Their series is called Ojai Concert Series. Their website can be found at http://www.ojaiconcertseries.com. You can reach them by email at info@ojaiconcertseries.com. We commend them for the zeal and excitement they bring to this new adventure. Check out their website to see their schedule and plans for the series!

Third, we encourage you to attend the Butlers' first concert with VOCO on Wednesday, March 7. Voco is an exciting band that blends Eastern European traditions with Appalachian harmonies and rhythms, sings shape note sets, performs astounding body percussion, and presents a variety of other vocal surprises during a performance. The vocals are supported by banjo, cello and percussion instruments. The Butlers have also booked a Tuesday, April 3 concert with singer/songwriters Fur Dixon and Steve Werner. Both shows are at the Ojai Valley Woman's Club, 441 E. Ojai Avenue.

We're old fashioned and we can't hand over your email addresses to anyone, because you signed up to receive mail from us and not from somebody else. So please take this opportunity to email Shane and Kelli at the address above so you can be added to their email list (this will NOT happen automatically) and stay informed about all the concerts they have upcoming. That's their job now. Meanwhile we'll be doing our work, reading the paper, cooking dinner, walking our dog, racing to stay ahead of this or that deadline -- just like you.

But we definitely will be at the March 7 VOCO concert and we hope to see you there too. Yes, we'll be sitting in the main room with y'all as part of the audience this time, not as the presenters. We know we'll feel right at home with you. See you soon.

With deep appreciation,

Tom and Becky

September 6, 2006
Dear Friends,

What a great time we've had for nearly 26 years of sharing music with you! In 1981 our yearning was to bring to Ojai great music from Ireland, Scotland, England, France, and Appalachia. To our delight, this intention yielded rich fruit. But music needs ears to hear it, hearts to understand it, and feet to dance it. All of you brought our concerts to life for over two decades. Thank you for being our partners in this venture. We will be grateful forever.
Our January 30, 2007 concert will be the last. Our first was January 26, 1981. The series bows out with a full 26 years and around 300 shows. We still have five more great concerts to bring to you and are counting on seeing you at one or all of our upcoming shows before we leave the stage. Bring friends, neighbors, relatives and anybody else you can find, for one last listen.
Small Potatoes kicks off our final season. This Chicago duo wanders effortlessly from folk to Celtic, from blues to cowboy songs. Next we'll hear Bill Staines, whose anthems to the West's wide-open spaces and his songs about love, work and children are simple and true, the real test of any folk song. Autoharp genius Bryan Bowers insisted on playing Ojai one more time, making a big detour to do itŠ sweet music to our ears. What he does with an autoharp is joyous musical grace. Exciting new duo, fiddler Liz Carroll and guitar player-singer John Doyle, know all the ways to reach our hearts with fast paced dance tunes, sweet slow airs, and ballads. We close with Diana Jones, a young, rootsy songwriter from Tennessee who's going places fast. This talented newcomer will sing and play us all into the musical future at our last concert.
Please buy advance tickets: send a check payable to Tom Lowe, 885 Oakwood St., Ojai 93023, with a self-addressed stamped envelope (separate checks for each concert, just one return envelope). Kids up to 10 are 1/2 price. Advance tickets are nonrefundable but assure you a seat; seating is first come, first served. Ticket trade? If you are a baker of delicious home-made goodies, call us in advance (646-5163) to arrange a trade of 100 homemade treats for a ticket.
It's been a joy to share the music we love for the past 26 years. We couldn't have done it without you. So many thank yous, so much help along the way. Every musician and audience member. Roz and Howard Larman, Elaine Weissman, Bill Yates, Heather Sanders, Nancy Bright, Emily Boyes, Jim Churchill, Bob Spittle, Alan Thornhill, Seabury Gould, Victor Garza, Larry MacMillan... all those who offered beds, food, cookies, other supports. Former agent Sharon Davis who trusted us, sight unseen at the start of the series, with the greatest traditional musical talent that Ireland, Scotland and the UK had. We learned so much about trust, friendship, and encouragement from all our musical friends and audience. And also that Heather Sanders' molasses cookies are the best!

With warm regards and huge appreciation,
Tom and Becky Lowe

"Eclectomaniacs" from Chicago, Illinois

Ojai Valley Woman's Club
441 E. Ojai Avenue, Ojai
Tuesday, September 26, 2006, 7:30 pm
$15 advance / $17 at the door

Small Potatoes is the duo Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso. Self-dubbed "eclectomaniacs," their mix of music has required, in their words, "years of indecision." Irish, country, blues, cowboy, and swing gives you a good idea of their range. Rich is a master on guitar, and Jacquie plays a bevy of instruments: flute, guitar, mandolin, bodhran, and tin whistle. Both sing, alone and together; they even yodel in harmony. We think they're one of the best acts on the folk circuit and are delighted to welcome them back to Ojai for a hearty third helping. They may be Small Potatoes, but to us they are Great Spuds. Join us September 26 and bring along a potato for the traditional 21 potato salute!

One of the first singer-songwriters we brought to Ojai, Bill Staines and his songs remain a delightful part of our lives as we drive to work or zip up 395 towards Lee Vining. Roseville Fair, Redbird's Wing, Yellowstone Wind, River, A Place in the Choir... and he's still at it, penning excellent new work we love as well as the old. We are thrilled to have him back in Ojai one last time. Adept at making the essence of the West come alive in song, Bill is just as skilled at composing touching odes to his first-born or poking fun at himself while highlighting the human condition. He's traveled the country for three decades, playing guitar and singing over 200 concerts a year. His songs, gentle humor, yodeling, and love of this land and its people shine through his performances. Don't miss this opportunity to spend an evening with Bill.

Traditional and contemporary tunes and songs by an Autoharp Master

Tuesday, October 31, 7:30 pm
Ojai Valley Woman's Club
441 E. Ojai Avenue, Ojai
$13 Advance, $15 Door

There's nothing much sweeter than the sound of the autoharp, especially when played by a master. The Carter family used it to bring us their great old-time music from the mountains of Appalachia. Bryan Bowers is the best autoharp player in the world. He'll fingerpick old tunes and Appalachian ballads, as well as gospel tunes and more modern songs from fine songwriters of today. Wait until you hear Irish fiddle tunes on his 'harp, or even The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Bryan can play nearly anything on this instrument, and will also entertain us with plenty of songs, comic anecdotes, and wit. See you in costume on this musical Halloween night!

Traditional and Original Irish Music!

St. Andrew's Episcopal Church
409 Topa Topa Drive, Ojai
Sunday, November 19, 2006, 4:00 pm
$16 advance / $18 at the door

This dynamic duo plays Irish music with inspired intensity, bringing every melody to its full beauty. Chicago-born Liz Carroll won the All Ireland Fiddle Championship at 18. Guitar player and singer John Doyle was an original member of Solas, a much-celebrated Irish band. Their music is the kind that inspired the creation of our concert series: rich, vibrant, spirited tunes from the venerable Celtic tradition. Irish fiddle music is always a welcome guest come celebrate its return on November 19. This concert only is at 4 pm, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 409 Topa Topa Drive.

Cowboy Entertainer!

Tuesday, January 16, 2007, 7:30 pm
Ojai Valley Woman's Club
441 E. Ojai Avenue, Ojai
$13 Advance, $15 Door

Sourdough is a Cowboy Songster, yodeler, Sagebrush Comic, lariat twirler, and instrumentalist. He plays guitar, ukulele, and accordion (like every self-respecting cowpuncher). Sourdough's self-confessed ambition is to entertain folks and make them laugh. And he knows how to do this with songs, yarns, yodels and yes, rope tricks. His stage getup looks like he just walked off the set of one of those classic B Westerns we once knew---"Bullets for Bandits," "Treachery Rides the Range," or "Cyclone on Horseback." Then there's Sourdough's rubber face that can express, and over express, a thousand emotions. On his last visit here we sold out and it was a great night of "can't stop laughing" mirth and mayhem. We expect the same this time. We know you'll have a great evening of amusement and delight if you share it with Sourdough. He's from Paradise, California and was born on a ranch in the Sierras. Instead of a home on the range, he's found a home on the stage. That's our great luck. Please join us for this night of song, music and fun.

Wonderful Singer/Songwriter!

Tuesday, January 30, 7:30 pm
Ojai Valley Woman's Club
441 E. Ojai Avenue, Ojai
$13 advance / $15 at the door

Diana Jones is a singer-songwriter who's quickly being discovered across the country. We've always loved being ahead of the crowd and have helped put together this first concert swing to California. She grew up in the Northeast, lived in Austin, and spent lots of time in Tennessee where her love for old time and Appalachian music grew. Her songs catch the old fashioned rhythms of mountain music married to lyrics that give a modern, clear eyed look at life's pleasures, sorrows, and dreams. Her latest CD is getting wide folk radio airplay across the USA, Canada, and even Europe. She plays the guitar and fiddle. We hope you'll share an evening of music with us one last time on January 30.
